There’s a certain magic about starting the new year in a place as enchanting as Iceland. As my plane descended toward Reykjavik on December 30th, I had no idea just how unforgettable the next 24 hours would be. By the time the clock struck midnight on December 31st, I had already experienced some of the most beautiful and surreal moments of my life. Here’s a glimpse into my first impressions and adventures in Reykjavik—a city that feels like it’s straight out of a fairy tale.
December 31st: my first full day in Reykjavik
Waking up in Reykjavik on December 31st, we were still surrounded in darkness when we went out for breakfast. We were greeted by the sun rising during the tour, which was the first glimpse of the city in daylight. The short winter days meant I had to make the most of every moment of sunlight, and Reykjavik didn’t disappoint. The streets filled with a unique blend of urban charm and natural beauty. Snow blanketed the rooftops and the fresh powdery snow on the ground crunched delightfully underfoot. It was cold but invigorating—the perfect setting for a day of exploration.
A walking tour to remember
To get to know the city better, I joined an incredible walking tour with a girl I met the night before, led by a passionate local guide. She shared fascinating stories of Reykjavik’s history, culture and quirky traditions, all while leading us through the city’s picturesque streets. From the iconic Hallgrímskirkja Church to the colorful buildings of downtown, I was captivated by Reykjavik’s charm. After the walking tour we decided to wander around a bit more and soak in the beauty of the city and all it has to offer. Later in the day, as we returned to the hostel, we encountered some wonderful fellow travelers. We soon found ourselves sharing stories and bonding over the thrill and awe of exploring Reykjavik.
Snow angels, northern lights and New Year’s fireworks
Going a bit back in time, but on our way back to the hostel after the walking tour, I couldn’t resist the temptation of the fresh snow and made a snow angel, reveling in the childlike joy of the moment.
As night fell, the excitement in the air was palpable. Reykjavik’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are renowned, and I was lucky enough to witness them firsthand. But before the fireworks began, the northern lights stole the show. The forecast was pretty good, and we decided to walk all the way to the lighthouse (an hour and 30 minutes’ walk). The walk was long but so worth it. The northern lights were absolutely amazing, and the sky came alive with ethereal green and purple waves dancing above me. It was a breathtaking spectacle—a moment of pure wonder that felt like a gift from nature itself. I'm not going to lie, I was tearful out of gratefulness and excitement. After taking many pictures and just watching with awe, my hands were completely frozen, and I was not able to move them until I finally held a cappuccino in my hand.
When midnight arrived, Reykjavik erupted in fireworks. The sky was filled with bursts of color, and the sound of laughter and cheers surrounded us. Crowds had gathered near Hallgrímskirkja Church, a popular spot to watch the fireworks display. Travelers and locals alike stood shoulder to shoulder, sharing in the excitement of welcoming the new year. It wasn’t just a party; it was a celebration of life, of community and of the unique magic that Iceland brings to every moment. The energy was infectious, and we celebrated our way into the new year alongside the locals.
Frozen lakes
The next day, I ventured onto a frozen lake in the city—an experience that felt straight out of a winter fantasy. I wasn’t alone; friends from the hostel joined me and together we made another snow angel on the ice. We half-expected some kind of dramatic cracking or cinematic moment, but the ice held firm, leaving us laughing at our overactive imaginations.
First impressions that will last forever
My first experiences in Iceland and Reykjavik were everything I hoped they would be and more. From the surreal beauty of the northern lights to the warmth of the people I met, every moment felt special. Reykjavik’s charm lies not only in its natural wonders but also in its vibrant community and the memories it inspires.
As I look back on my first day and nights in this incredible city, I can’t help but feel grateful for the magical start to the year. If this is how 2025 begins, I can only imagine the adventures that lie ahead.
